Some Simple Ways to Cut Back on Salt

While a safe level of sodium intake is 1.1 to 3.3 grams per day, most Americans consume between 2.3 and 6.9 grams daily. Because high sodium intake can be associated with high blood pressure, it is important to limit salt use. Yet since people often lose their sensitivity to flavors and smells as they grow older, they may also increase their use of salt.

It can be easy for people to change a few dietary habits to reduce sodium intake without greatly changing their diet.

To begin with, learn which foods in general contain less sodium. Fresh foods usually have less sodium then processed ones. Fresh meat is lower in sodium than lunch meat, bacon, hot dogs, sausage and ham all of which have sodium added to flavor and preserve them. Most fresh vegetables are naturally low in sodium, while canned vegetables and vegetable juices usually have salt added. Canned peas, for example, have 90 times more salt than fresh peas.

Commercially prepared foods, such as soups, frozen dinners and other "fast food" items all have added salt. One TV dinner can provide all the salt an average adult needs for several days. Beware of salty snacks, such as potato chips, pretzels, crackers and nuts.

When grocery shopping, read nutrition labels for sodium content. If sodium is one of the first three ingredients listed, the product is high in sodium.

When cooking meals at home, try to gradually reduce the amount of salt you use each day. People should remember that salt is not the only way to flavor foods. Instead of reaching for the salt shaker, try adding lemon, pepper, herbs, onion, garlic powder, or other spices.

Remember to go easy on some condiments. Ketchup, mustard, relish, soy sauce and salad dressings have high sodium content, as do pickles, olives and dips.

If your food tastes bland without the added salt, try chewing it more thoroughly. This will allow food to better interact with taste receptors in the mouth while also aiding in digestion. It may also help to alternate bites of different foods.

If you plan to use a salt substitute, be sure to ask you doctor first. These preparations usually contain potassium and can be harmful to people with some medical conditions.

What Is The Best Dosage of Fish Oil You Should Take to Lose Weight?

It has been clinically tested and proven that fish oil helps lose weight. Numerous researches in this field have been carried and all have affirmed the clinical finding that with reasonable proportion of sea food, especially that of Piscean species, one can lose a good amount of weight and also stay healthy, wealthy and wise.

In comparison to regular vegetable oil, these oils bear a higher ratio of Omega 3 fatty acids compounds, EPA and DHA to be precise. Moreover, it is the quality that matters more than the quantity. Make sure to use only 100% pure and distilled fish oil for the purpose of consumption. Sea food especially the fish cooked, roasted or grilled is also considered as a good source of Omega 3.

Do You Have a Gluten Or Wheat Intolerance?

Here are some of the foods which are safe to eat and that are Gluten free such as arrowroot, buckwheat, corn, flax, flour which is made from seeds, nuts and beans, lean meat, fish and poultry. Fresh fruit and vegetables, potato, potato flour, rice, sago, rice bran, sorghum, distilled liquor and wine as well as ciders.

This diet is commonly referred to as a hunter gather diet as for thousands of years people ate fish, poultry and meat, vegetables, roots, seeds, and fruit and these foods were usually eaten raw. No dairy products were eaten during these times either. However, the modern Paleo diet the food is now cooked which eliminates any toxins and of course cooking makes the food edible.

Healthy Eating Is Not About Staying Unrealistically Thin

If you are drawn towards sweet, salty or unhealthy foods, start by reducing portion sizes and not eating them as often. If you succeed in planning your diet around fibre-rich fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean protein, and good fats, you may find yourself naturally cutting back on foods that can get in the way of your healthy diet such as sugar, salt and refined starches.

Despite what certain fad diets would have you believe, we all need a balance of carbohydrates, protein, fat, fibre, vitamins, and minerals to sustain a healthy body. Vegetables are necessary for a healthy diet but avoid fried vegetables and those with dressings or sauces containing too much unhealthy fat and calories.

General Rules With Diets

A diet is much more than a temporary alimentary regime we take up when we want to lose weight. A diet defines our lifestyle and our daily cooking style. In order to stay fit both physically and psychologically, we need to know a few basic rules which nutritionists recommend us when it comes to nutrition, diets and silhouette.

First of all, you should only eat meat once a day, in order to gain some proteins. Eat chicken or fish instead of fat or hashed meat. Then, you should try to eat grilled, baked or steamed meat. There are more fats with fried meat as it absorbs a lot of oil. If you choose to fry the meat, use corn oil or palm oil and a special tray, which needs a lot less oil than a normal tray.

You can replace the meat with eggs, these also being very rich in proteins. However, you should be attentive not to eat more than four eggs a week because they are very rich in cholesterol. Then, you should prefer the snacks made of fruit, fresh vegetables or seeds and nuts to the ones consisting of chips, pudding and so on. Fruit and vegetables are very important in a diet. Fruit have to be consumed moderately because they are very rich in sugars. Vegetables are very important because they contain a lot of fibres, especially the ones which have green leaves or beans. Fibres can also be found in integral cereals and help you with the reduction of the amount of food you eat. In other words, you feel full without eating too much.

A last piece of advice would be to avoid eating too much salt and to eat your breakfast no matter what. The salt keeps the water in your body and makes you feel like a balloon all the time. As for the breakfast part, if you have this meal, you are very likely to eat less throughout the rest of the day and therefore, you maintain your silhouette.

A Drop of the White Stuff

Did you have to drink Milk as a kid? Remember, even at school in those little bottles it was warm. I remember when I was little, my mum had to put my mug of milk in the freezer compartment of the fridge to make it extra extra cold so I couldn't taste it

So now you know I don't like milk, I am not going to be biased writing this little article now am I? Honestly, I just want you guys to know why Milk isn't as good as the Milk Marketing Board tells you it is. But as I write this, I must firstly tell you that Raw Milk (Goats raw milk is even better, get yourself a goat!) is awesome, and if you can get some of that from a farmer, then get it, though its hard as the Gov have made it expensive for farmers to follow this route, so they are few and far between. If you thought all milk was raw, then think again! I had to, and here's what I found.

Milk and dairy products are all heavily processed foods, using Pasteurisatioon & homogenisation, the body finds this processed food difficult to digest, the calcium benefits are very few. For me, being over 40 and having been through an early menopause, I was naturally worried about the state of my bones. When the body is depleted of calcium it basically feeds off its own bones to get the calcium back into the bloodstream, thus the bones become brittle. I had a bone scan recently and my bones are fine, and I stopped drinking milk when my mum stopped making me drink it. I am now 45, over my menopause, and not a brittle bone in sight.

So when I told the nurse who was operating the scanner that I hate milk and haven't drunk it for nearly 30 years she was very very worried and looked at me in shock and sympathy, expecting my skeleton to turn to dust in front of her eyes. She told me that Milk remained the top source of calcium and I should be taking calcium supplements, more about those later! When I commented that almonds and green veg have more calcium than milk, she looked at me as if I was totally off my rocker... Milk is best apparently!

So, what happens to Milk, what makes is so intolerable to our digestive system. Lets start with the animal that produces it. Most cows are fed hormones in their feed, their feed isn't that pure, and they aren't fed grass all day long like you see in the adverts. (grass fed beef is hard to come by and expensive, but its the best beef you can eat... but that's for another topic we will cover later)

What are cows fed then? Grain is cheap and there's a lot of it, but its already nutritionally depleted, sprayed with chemicals, other foods may be added like potato waste, bread that's discarded by the factories, rapeseed meal, again, sprayed with chemicals. Remember BSE? I wont go into that, but it was a way to get more Protein into the cattle through feeding them remnants of other, to fatten them up quicker.

Now this enlarge isn't a "lets blame the farmer" topic, but its the demand that they face to keep the milk production going that means they have to use these methods. Dairy cows are now like toys on a Generation Game conveyor belt!

Most of the old style dairy breeds have diminished. The higher milk yielding cows remain (cash cows!), the black and white breeds. When they are expected to produce high yields, the vitamin content the cow passes onto the milk is diluted. Hormones are secreted into the milk they produce. They are fed the nutrient poor grain which their body finds hard to digest. If the food they are fed is below standard, how can we expect the milk they produce to be of a high standard? The same as humans, you are what you eat...

The cows digestive system is complex, but basically the first stomach becomes over acidic, it then produces extra lactic acid to deal with this, which is absorbed into the bloodstream. excess acid then kills the micro organisms in the stomach, not a good thing for the milk being produced. Intensive milking can lead to udder infection, mastitis. Antibiotics are injected into the udders to treat this, which can end up in the milk.

So, Pasteurisation... what is it? It heats the milk to kill the bugs, also killing enzymes whilst its at it, reducing the vitamin quality of the milk by at least half. It last longer in the supermarket and in your fridge, aren't you wondering how a so called "fresh" product can last so long on the shelves? don't you look for a sell by or use by date that means you can keep it longer? ever wondered how they do that?

Calcium: here's a big one then. When I tell my clients not to drink milk, they are worried about calcium deficiency.

But Milk consumption increases acidity in the body. Water will alkalise it (not tap water obviously, that topic will be discussed next!) you need 20 glasses to neutralise 1 glass of milk. Cows Milk calcium is coarser than humans milk calcium (did you think it was made the same?) the calcium is degraded through the pasteurisation, homogonisation, being skimmed, semi skimmed... almost impossible to absorb in our human gut.

Did you know the following will give your body the calcium it needs: Green veg! Broccoli, green beans, peas, cauliflower, hazel nuts, almonds, parsley, spinach, kiwi, cabbage, squashes.

You dont need to cling to the Milk for Calcium rubbish you have been fed for years and years, its just not true!

Magnesium: A mineral found in many vegetables and pulses, magnesium is better for bone density than calcium it is widely thought. Broccoli (again!) spinach, artichokes, green beans, tomatoes, pinto beans, sunflower seeds, Tofu, cashews, fish.

We are told to drink milk for healthy bones and teeth, for calcium, so we do, yet we have a high rate of osteoporosis in the UK, so does Sweden and especially high in the USA and they drink gallons of the stuff. China & Japan are not milk lovers yet have the lowest rates of osteoporosis. There're many reports stating these statistics available for you to pour over!

If you are going to drink the white stuff, drink it raw, untreated, from grass fed cows. If you cannot find that, drink coconut milk, rice milk... anything but milk milk from the supermarket shelves.

Energy Drinks - Healthy, Down Right Good For You Energy

From convenience stores to office supply centers, energy drinks are popular. The beverages promise to provide the energy needed to carry us through the crunch period of the day. It is undeniable how popular the drinks have become. What are we to think of this energy drink sensation, what are the side effects that we may be exposing ourselves to if we participate? How healthy are they?

The developers of energy beverages have obviously concentrated on one thing, delivering the much sought after energy punch to see us through. They concentrated on energy, what is not so clear is the energy healthy? Medical professionals are not clear about how safe these drinks are. Some Energy drinks have extreme amounts of B Vitamins at levels of 8000% over the recommended daily amounts. High amounts of other natural ingredients at least leave us with the question about how safe the drinks may be. One thing is certain they work but are we paying a price for it with our health.

Like most things, there are choices and the energy drink sensation is not without one. There are healthy energy drinks available on the market today. Some brands have even provided a complete vitamin, mineral and antioxidant supplementation into each drink. Take the concern out of whether or not the drink may be healthy, and provide a beverage that is obviously healthy. A great marketing strategy would be not only to provide energy but at the same time provide a complete vitamin and mineral supplement that replaces your pills in the morning. Now that's healthy energy without a crash or a 5 hour limit.

Antioxidants are another nutrient that is lacking in our diets. Xanthones are the most powerful of all the antioxidants that have been studied and used by the Chinese for hundreds of years. These Xanthones are also available in an energy drink. A health beverage would combine beyond the daily recommended amounts all the vitamins, minerals and antioxidants in each drink. A beverage that would not only provide energy, it would provide healthy energy.

Elementary Rules With Diets

All people should learn that they need to eat healthy food if they want to stay away from all kinds of illnesses. Here are the main rules when it comes to this.

First of all, you should eat at least three times a day, taking a break of approximately five hours between your meals. Also, once you have set your hours, you should avoid eating between your regular meals. Then, you should not mix fruit and vegetables and you shouldn't drink any water during your meals. Also, be careful with the cooking techniques you apply every day because it is very easy to eliminate all the vitamins and the good stuff in your aliments. Make sure that about eighty per cent of your daily meals are made of alkaline aliments. If you have any problems, your diet should be based on a percentage of at least ninety when it comes to alkaline aliments. If the acid aliments make it easier for different illnesses to attack you, the alkaline ones prevent these illnesses.

According to the season, you should consume forest fruit, grapefruit, pineapple, apricots, peaches, cherries, figs, bananas, oranges, apples, lemons, grapes, melons, pears, plums and so on. Also, you should consume cornflower, cabbage, carrots, cucumbers, tomatoes, potatoes, lettuce, onion, parsley, spinach, beans and so on. Last but not least, you should also eat soy, green beans, peas, Lima beans and other such vegetables.

When it comes to rules and preparation secrets, you should never spread sugar on your fruit and you should know that the vegetables can always replace the meat in your meals. Also, natural juices are very healthy, but you need to hash them very well. Enjoy the rest of your meals!
